Senior Care

4 min read

Ren Ci Woodlands Nursing Home is using senior-friendly applications and technology-enabled infrastructure to empowers residents. Their work is encouraging independence and active ageing, better engagement and socialisation.

Established in 1994, Ren Ci's story is built on providing compassionate care for patients and seniors across the nation. Nestled in the North heartlands of Singapore, Ren Ci Woodlands Nursing Home is the organisation's newest facility. It is part of the sprawling Woodlands Health Campus that opened in early 2024, a sizeable 1,800-bed complex where SMART technology is employed to complement people-centred care.

Ren Ci WNH is unique in its infrastructure. The facility is designed to offer seniors greater comfort and autonomy by using a household concept. Residents live in households of 16, which contain 4-bed bedrooms clustered around shared spaces to encourage independent living. This facility also provides many opportunities for seniors in care to explore their environment freely, from koi ponds, to kopi corners, and healing gardens.

Key Challenges

A challenged shared by nursing home operators is maintaining or improving resident engagement. Providing holistic care includes providing meaningful and enjoyable activities that uphold quality of life for residents. For many nursing homes, a lack of manpower and largely manual operations can restrict the range of activities that can be offered to residents. Residents may experience boredom, frustration, or a lack of autonomy in their daily schedules.

In search of a solution to promote healthy and meaningful engagement in residents, Ren Ci WNH has dared to depart from the brick and mortar by adopting various technological innovations.

The Solution

Ren Ci WNH approached WerkDone with a vision to provide residents with more independence, community spirit, and freedom to explore the multi-level compound. The result was comprehensive solution comprising a Movement Control System and My Wellness App, a senior-friendly tablet application to promote engagement and socialisation in residents.

The Movement Control System facilitates seamless visitor management and residents' ease of movement between activities. Using facial recognition technology, the system allows fully mobile residents to safely explore the multi-level compound's amenities. For residents with limited mobility, requiring assistance to get around, My Wellness App provides a swift and ever-accessible means to contact staff. Staff can use indicators such as fall risk or dementia to determine which areas a senior can access independently, and which require caregiver accompaniment. The system is also integrated with the nursing home's CCTV camera system for abscondment prevention and dementia wander management.

Each resident receives a tablet with My Wellness App installed, an application designed to enhance physical and psychosocial well-being. WerkDone's UI/UX and technology team conducted extensive research into behavioural motivators and senior-friendly design, creating gamification features adapted for seniors and an interface focused on accessibility and usability. It motivates and drives meaningful engagement by providing residents with more choice and freedom in their daily activities. Residents can personalise their own activity schedules and communicate independently with family, friends, and befrienders.

My Wellness App respects each resident's unique story by letting them choose activities and complete projects at their own pace. Residents can even champion self-starter projects of their own and form a community with like-minded individuals. The app uses an incentive and reward system to motivate participation and engagement in activities. Residents earn coins for completing activities and projects which can be used to redeem rewards. They can also earn milestone badges to show off achievements and promote a sense of accomplishment, or Ranger Points for helping to organise activities.

The app supports community building around care. Its social networking features encourage socialisation and facilitate ease of communication. Residents can organise meet ups with other residents, reach out to befrienders, as well as chat and receive photos from family members. These channels give residents more autonomy and convenience in daily social interactions and provide new ways for them to connect with their community.

Many residents live with severe physical limitations and dementia, so the application also includes features that focus on preserving quality of life and dignity. Residents with limited mobility can use the Social feature to connect with loved ones, choose from classic games, and utilise the Sound feature for sensory stimulation. They can also utilise the app's other features with guided assistance from loved ones, caregiving staff, and volunteers.

The Vision

Ren Ci WNH's endeavours mark a new chapter in Singapore's senior care landscape. They are transforming the outdated finality of nursing homes into vibrant hubs where life is lived to the fullest. Ren Ci WNH is bridging the digital divide by making the benefits of modern technology more accessible to the elderly. Recognising that new technology can be intimidating, the solution embeds simple digital functions in familiar daily activities and interactions with loved ones, providing residents with greater communication, convenience, and choice.
